What color is Hello Kitty, and why she is easy to get right
Hello Kitty is white. Her whole body, her face and her paws are white, the bow on her left ear is red, her nose is yellow, and her eyes and whiskers are black. Sanrio has drawn her that way since 1974, when the designer Yuko Shimizu created her for a vinyl coin purse, and it has not changed since. That is why she is so easy to color well: leave her white, get the bow red, and she is unmistakable.
She has no mouth, and that is a decision, not an omission. Sanrio's explanation is that without a mouth she can share whatever the person looking at her feels, happy or sad. Her full name is Kitty White, she is five apples tall and three apples heavy, and she has a twin sister, Mimmy, who wears her bow on the other ear. In 2014 Sanrio caused a small uproar by pointing out that she is not a cat but a little girl, and then let everyone go on calling her a kitty anyway.
Because Kitty herself takes almost no color, everything in these drawings happens around her: the witch hat, the rainbow, the mermaid tail, the gown, the rings of the mandala. Pick the outfit or the setting, and the drawing tells you where the color goes.
Leave Kitty white. The temptation is to color her cream or pink, and it always looks wrong: a white Kitty with a red bow and a yellow nose is the whole character, and the color belongs to everything around her.
Common questions
What color is Hello Kitty's bow?
Red. Sanrio draws it on her left ear, and it is the one part of her that is always the same color; the rest of her is white.
Why does Hello Kitty have no mouth?
Sanrio has always said it is so she can reflect the mood of whoever looks at her. On a coloring page it also means one less thing to draw: her face is the bow, two eyes, a nose and six whiskers.
Is Hello Kitty a cat?
According to Sanrio, no: she is a little girl and a cartoon character, with a pet cat of her own called Charmmy Kitty. The debate came up in 2014 and has never really ended.
Which Hello Kitty coloring page is the easiest?
The face on its own. Four large areas, a thick line and no background, so it works with a fat crayon at two years old.
Is there a Hello Kitty coloring page for adults?
Yes, the mandala: Kitty at the center of rings of petals and hearts, with the finest linework in the collection.
