Three trick-or-treaters stand at a front door: one in a pumpkin costume, one in a dress with a candy bag, one in a witch hat, each holding a bucket, with a jack-o-lantern hanging on the door, a cobweb in the corner, bats, bare branches and a crescent moon above. It is a full scene with a lot of small separate pieces, costumes, pumpkins on the step, the door panels, which is why it lands with the harder drawings. Trick-or-treating in this form took hold in America in the 1930s, when the phrase first appeared in print, and the door with a lit pumpkin is still the signal that a house is taking part. The little witch with a broom is the same costume, on her own.

How to color Trick-or-treating at the front door

  1. pink Give each costume its own color: orange for the pumpkin suit, black or purple for the witch, any bright color for the dress.
  2. A dark red or brown for the door and orange for every pumpkin, on the door and on the step.
  3. Night blue for the sky, the moon and stars left white, and grey for the bare branches.
